Chapter 19

Water dripped from the large stones used to build the ruins in which we were now standing. Moss and slimy green plants blanketed the decrepit buildings that looked like they had once been grand. The smell of stale air hung around us as I faced Henry.

I had destroyed his men but whatever protection Alaric had granted my old enemy was still preventing me from ending his life. Even as I watched the slash in his side from my sword knitted itself together and though he was weaponless I knew that I couldn't kill him. Not until I removed the power protecting him or found a way to use the spear.

The spear that he still held.

All I had at the moment was my personality and a sword that wouldn’t injure him. Taunting it was.

“I saw your son, you know.” I whirled my sword around, preparing to distract him while my power simmered under my skin ready to be released. “Henrick is still in Hell, still as much of a dick as ever.”

I concentrated on the water molecules in Henry’s body as another wave of magic spread from the stone. The power rippled over me, its wrongness pushing against my own power, and as the magic rose to my lips, ready for my song to tear this bastard apart, my power died.

“My son,” Henry ground out. “You saw my son? You aren’t good enough to be in his presence, you little whore. I spent years in Hell trying to find him.”

“Whore?” I said, raising an eyebrow. “You do realize the irony of calling me that. I was neither unfaithful to your son nor have ever been paid for sex.” With confidence I didn’t feel after my power had failed, I strode toward him, halting only inches from my enemy.

Henry’s eyes narrowed. "I guess you're not as good as you think if you couldn't find him," I taunted.

“Is he—” His mouth twisted as he realized he would have to ask me for information about his son, he would have to ask the one who had killed his child for answers. “Is he okay?”

I laughed. “He was pathetic. Begging me on his knees to help him escape. I don't know what I ever saw in him.” I waved a hand. “I said no of course. He is where he belongs.”

Henry lunged but I anticipated the move and sidestepped, making sure that I was far enough away to avoid the weapon he held if he lashed out behind him. The broken spear hummed and where it had repelled me the last time I had seen it, I was now drawn to it.

Around us, the large shield he had put up at the bottom of Lake Michigan stretched and groaned. Whatever magic he had used to keep it in place was failing, small cracks appearing in the dome and pouring water into the bubble of air that kept his Hunters safe. The magic around this area, the sanctuary that had been guarded by the water dragons for millennia, was starting to fail.
